BMW's M5 has a loyal enthusiast following in North America. So when the fourth-generation M5 arrived last year, many purists were dismayed at the singular choice of transmission, the 7-speed Sequential Manual Gearbox, or SMG. That problem has been rectified for 2007 with the introduction of a 6-speed manual gearbox as a no-cost, no-credit option. Ironically, only North America will receive the manny-tranny M5; the rest of the world gets only the SMG 'box.
BMW claims the manual gearbox has been specially developed for the M5. It features a dual-mass, hydraulically-damped flywheel that is tuned specifically for the power delivery of the V10 engine. The primary clutch plate is also made of forged steel for added strength, and the entire clutch assembly is self-adjusting. As with the SMG-equipped M5, the manually shifted version also gets M Dynamic Mode stability control, allowing for greater longitudianl and lateral acceleration in dry conditions for a more engaging driving experience, such as on the track. While the SMG may not be popular with enthusiasts, it is effective at maximizing the fuel economy of the V10 powerhouse. As a result, the six-speed manual is hit with a $700-higher Gas Guzzler Tax, a total of $3700. Other changes for 2007 include the addition of a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and a full 4-year subscription to BMW Assist instead of the previous 1-year subscription. BMW once again offers new M5 owners a complementary course in advanced driving techniques at the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Интересно, а много людей смогут за 0.65 сек. выжать сцепление, переключить передачу и отпустить сцепление!
