E30 M3 – More information

History Presented as a prototype at the Frankfurt Show in September 1985, first production M3s were built in September 1986, the final M3 Coupes were built in December 1990.

In all there were 17,970 models – (17184 Saloons, 786 Cabriolets). To homologate the M3 for Group A touring races 5,000 had to be built.

The production volumes were too high for BMW’s Motorsports Garching factory so cars were batch produced at the main assembly plant in Munich by special teams. However the Cabriolets were hand finished at the Garching factory.

Only produced in LHD as demand for RHD was expected to be small and did not warrant the cost of development.

A few cars were converted to RHD in the UK but used the slower rack from the 325i, some performance was lost due to the work required on the exhaust manifold.


Body The body shell is essentially a two door Coupe E30 but is not interchangeable, the only shared panels being the doors and bonnet.

The rake on the rear window is different to direct airflow toward the rear spoiler for down force. Both front and rear screens are bonded for added stiffness to the shell. The deep front spoilers are manufactured from SMC plastic.

The distinctive steel wing panels are flared to accommodate wider wheels in racing form; the everted side sills are unique. The boot lid sits higher and wraps over the cars rear panel all to aid aerodynamics. The full width spoiler is mounted on top of the trailing edge.

The rear bumper section is more pronounced also formed in SMC plastic and has everted lower edges for airflow management. The radio aerial is roof mounted.

The same design cross wheels with five stud fixing covered all the range though the early cars were 15" and later cars with 16”.

Interior:
Each of the variants had unique seat fabric and door cards. The rear seat was contoured for two persons only. The front seats are Recaro, all with manual adjustment. It was optional for the opening windows to have manual winding or electric mechanism.

Two different types of steering wheel design covered the production run.

Sill plates were plain on all cars except EVO and Cecotto models, which had M3 stamped in Silver graphics.

A generous sized dead pedal was fitted to all models and provides a comfortable and well placed footrest.

The instruments all had red needles and the dash panel had the tricolour Motor Sport Logo.

Two different leather gear knobs were available across the production run.

Air conditioning was an optional extra; as was a full on board computer or the less complex clock based unit.


Engine Block material cast iron; the engine was developed from the M5 M88 six cylinder engine by simply removing two cylinders and became the S14 with twin overhead camshafts four valve alloy head and individual throttle valves for each cylinder with motronic engine management.

The cam covers with BMW M Power and horizontal vanes in polished relief were either black crinkled finish or in white with Motorsport tricolours EVO11 and as per car colour Cecotto or Ravaglia versions, likewise the plenum chamber.

Suspension, Steering, Brakes & Transmission:
The stub axles are from the E28 5 Series to provide larger wheel bearings and 5 stud fixing.

The geometry of the front struts are unique to the M3 along with the rear trailing arms angled at 15°. The shock absorbers have gas filled tubes and thicker anti roll bars.

The steering is power-assisted rack and pinion with 3.6 turns from lock to lock. The front discs are 280mm from the 535I model, while the ABS braking system was tuned uniquely to the M3.

The Getrag close ratio 5 speed box has the dog left first gear to enable fast changes through the main gears and with supremely mated ratios to suit the engines power band.

Finally, the larger capacity battery is housed in the boot to aid front / rear weight distribution.

Racing Cars BMW Motorsport – produced an approximate total of 330 cars purely for competition: 270 for Group A in kit form for customer preparation, 60 for Group N.


Buying In the long run it is far less expensive and more rewarding to purchase a top condition car than to buy cheaply and then spend money on continuous repairs.

A continuous and fully documented history of service units by BMW main agents or reputable specialists is a must.

There are many clocked cars offered and it has been known for these to come with forged service records so check history very thoroughly to avoid future disappointment either through expensive repairs or when trying to sell the car on.

Check shut lines for accident damage.

Check the wing panels by walking slowly around a cleaned car and seeing if the light picks up on any tell tale ripples, if damaged the panels are very difficult to make perfect again.

Check the condition of the front strut housings, over hard suspension can cause cracking and structural damage.

Check the scuttle below the front bonded windscreen by pulling up the rubber gaiter, rust can develop unseen from past damage to paintwork if the screen has been replaced, the scuttles are cheap to buy but expensive to fit as often the screens cannot be removed without breaking.

It is prudent to replace the original spring / cup type chain tensioner with one for the E36 M3.

There is much debate about the need or otherwise to replace the timing chains at the fabled 100,000 mile mark, the chain tensioner mod may overcome the perceived problem but do your own research on this one.

The two air blocks on the inlet manifolds can cause rough running, if in doubt spray WD40 around the blocks with the engine running, if the engine note changes then replace them.

Syncromesh on 2nd and 3rd gear does wear out, specialists can repair these but ensure work comes with a warranty; otherwise exchange boxes can be bought from the BMW main dealers.

On driving, the car should track true and straight, investigate any concern.

The standard brake discs are as good as any and not that expensive, buy optional out of spec pads with caution.

The car has to be driven well and hard to unlock its treasure chest, the power delivery is between 4-7000, so if you want a quiet torquey engined car buy the later E36. If you want a car developed by Motorsport engineers for dynamic race bred driving this is the one, but buy wisely with your head – spend time on researching the car’s history and pay for an inspection by a suitably qualified engineer.

Prices across the variants are most dramatic with the EVO Sport, they command a much higher value, they will always be the ultimate collectors car, whether it’s worth it is a personal choice, however a dog is a dog and it will be more rewarding to spend £8,000, for example on a pristine low mileage (any) M3 than £9 or £10,000 on a questionable EVO Sport.

Finally, this first generation M3 is without doubt one of the finest drivers cars ever produced by BMW, it is forgiving and a car to inspire driver confidence, but it is not necessarily the right car for everyone, be clear what it is you are looking for out of the car to make sure it is the right match.


Modifications The engines are very highly tuned; extra performance will be extremely costly and will hamper resale value and probably reliability.

Stainless steel exhaust systems are liable to crack due to harsh characteristics of the engine; the standard systems are costly but are best and last for years, also probably quieter. Watch out with swept up DTM pipes; they will deteriorate paintwork on the bumper.

Front sub frames can crack but can be easily welded.

These are not cheap cars to run and maintain, non-pattern parts are few.

Too stiffly sprung and lowered cars will dramatically ruin a cars handling on all but billiard smooth racetracks. A C Schnitzer produce a fast road system that is expensive but transforms the ride and handling.

Cloth upholstery was always grey, with a hounds-tooth check on early cars and a tartan like pattern on later models. Leather upholstery was available in Black, Cardinal Red (to August 1988), Natur, Pearl Beige (to August 1987) or Silver Grey (from September 1987).
